The BarOn EQ-i consists of a personality questionnaire with 133 short and clear statements. In principle, the BarOn EQ-i is suitable for everyone from BTEC Level 3 Diploma (UK), Associate’s degree (terminal/vocational program (USA), as the statements are formulated in an easily understood way. Filling it in, takes only 15 minutes.
Reuven Bar-On was a researcher who noticed, among other things, that people with a high IQ sometimes failed to achieve, while others with a much lower IQ were often more successful.
Successful in the sense of: in general, more happy; having better social connections at the appropriate level; successful at work and having more personal ambition. He concluded that this was mainly due to the way people deal with their intelligence, their environment and how they use their emotional intelligence (EQ) and social skills.
He described Emotional Intelligence (EQ) as a separate skill and in 1997 he developed a test which he patented and marketed. This was officially called BarOn Emotional Quotient inventory. In fact, EQ-i is more an inventory than a test. BarOn EQ-i measures personality traits.
All EQ elements can be coached and changed, while the IQ is fairly fixed. Measures are taken of intra-personal dimensions (the inner), inter-personal dimensions (dealing with others), adaptability, stress management and general mood.
According to Bar-On, EQ is a series of non-cognitive abilities, competences and skills that influence a person’s chance of success in meeting the demands and pressure from the environment.
